It's a pain to have to stop what I'm doing and use both hands to open tongs. There are two ways to do this: drop whatever you might be doing with the other hand and use that, or use your teeth. Using my teeth is not acceptable. These OXO Good Grips are ok as far as tongs go. On the other hand, the tongs are very convenient to close because one simply has to push down on a hard surface and the mechanism slides in and closes the tongs. The one problem I have with these is that you need two hands to open them from the closed position and this is not always convenient to do when you are cooking. They do the job satisfactorily for grabbing food whether cooking it or serving it. The mechanism at the top needs to be pulled out in order to open these.
They clean easily and can go in the dishwasher. These tongs are multi-purpose.they work great for non-stick pans as well as any other type of pan.
I count this under "accident/inappropriate use" so that's not a real issue with this product. The handle becomes sticky, gummy and leaves black, sticky streaks on your hands. Some of OXO's products, which are normally pretty good to great, make use of this rubbery black plastic, on handles or other parts. The bigger issue is that this plastic also melts, over time, after putting the tongs in the dishwasher. The tongs are brilliant and work really well; unfortunately OXO cut corners on the materials used (which unfortunately is true of a lot of their products) :(Nevertheless, I got a second one and will use it until it also melts ;) This handle's made of pretty shoddy, low heat resistant plastic. The handle melts over flames/resting on hot objects, as mentioned in other reviews.
I bought this for my husband to use on our non-stick pans, he loves it and so do my pans.
Having the nylon heads helps to not puncture food (or tear apart), scratch nonstick skillets, etc. The grips are helpful and have the same quality as the rest of the utensil.
The locking mechanism will last for a long time and these tongs do stand up to the Oxo name. The overall quality is top notch.
This is my second pair of Oxo locking tongs and I've been pleased with both. You do have to keep them away from high heat (grills, or keeping them against a skillet for an extended period of time).
Highly recommended. My first Oxo tongs did not have nylon heads, which is fine, but I wanted to try these tongs out.
I got a bunch of use out of my original Oxo tongs, but having the nylon heads definitely is an added benefit.
